At our Children’s Foundation and Music Centre, we are currently facing a serious and ongoing water crisis that threatens the health and wellbeing of the children under our care. Although piped water was installed by the government several years ago, the supply is extremely unreliable. Water can be unavailable for months. For example, throughout the whole of 2025, we received piped water on only six different days. Even worse the water often flows late at night when everyone is asleep, making it impossible to collect and store it. We have not received piped water since 2026 started. This challenge affects not only our foundation but also the entire surrounding community. Despite repeated efforts to engage the responsible authorities over many years, no lasting solution has been provided. As a result, both the foundation and the community have been forced to rely on a nearby open well for domestic water. At the foundation, this has created a major health risk for the children, as the water is unsafe for drinking. We are compelled to boil all drinking water, which consumes large amounts of fuel, time, and energy. Even with these efforts, it is extremely difficult to completely prevent children from drinking untreated water especially when they are thirsty and the boiled water is still hot and needs time to cool. We do not have a refrigerator to store cooled water. This situation puts the children’s lives at risk and continues to increase medical expenses for the foundation resources that could otherwise be used to support their education, nutrition, and wellbeing. After further consultations with local authorities, and a professional groundwater installation company we were advised to establish a groundwater system as a long-term solution. This involves excavating underground water, installing a water pump, water filters and setting up storage tanks so that clean water can be readily available and easily treated for the children at all times. And the total cost for this life saving project is 1000 Euros.
